Different Types Of Fabric

I often get asked about the different types of fabric that our styles of clothing are made of so, I thought I would give a bit of info about each one.
Cotton: A popular favourite amongst many of our customers. Cotton loves moisture so, it wets easily. Cotton can hold a lot more water than many synthetic fibres can. It draws moisture away from the body which then evaporates through the fabric, allowing the skin to ‘breathe’. Because it is breathable, it allows heat that is produced by the body to escape, therefore, keeping it cool and dry.
Linen: Linen is derived naturally from the flax plant, which is extremely versatile. Linen can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture. As with cotton, linen draws moisture away from the body and keeps you cooler in the warmer months, but it also keeps you warmer in the cooler months.
Viscose and Rayon: Viscose and Rayon are actually the same type of fabric! They are made from purified cellulose fibres, which are usually made from wood pulp. They are derived from natural materials, however, they require the addition of certain chemicals in order to be produced. They are therefore considered to be a semi-synthetic fabric. Viscose and Rayon are actually more absorbent than cotton! Cotton is an insulating fabric but viscose and rayon are a non-insulating fabric, which is why they are commonly used in places with a humid climate, such as Australia. Cotton is best to use in a warm climate. The disadvantage with Rayon and Viscose is that it can shrink after its first wash. Many brands compensate by cutting their fabric oversize.
Polyester: Polyester is a 100% synthetic fabric that’s usually derived from petroleum. Polyester is durable and moisture resistant. This makes it a less breathable fabric and will in turn make you feel hot and sticky. When blended with cotton, polyester improves the shrinkage and durability of a garment.
Chiffon: Chiffon has a sheer, transparent appearance and can be derived from different fibres, such as cotton, silk and Polyester. These days chiffon is mostly made from polyester as it is more durable. Polyester chiffon is not very breathable so can make you feel hot.
